Immigrant History Initiative’s new program will guide Asian American families in talking and learning about history, race, and belonging in America. - All facilitators will attend a training that orients them with the AALP materials and methods of teaching and facilitation. All lesson plans, activities, and materials for program sessions are provided by IHI.
- The program is fully remote and held over Zoom except for the last week of the program, which will be an in-person celebration (dependent on COVID conditions) in New Jersey.
- Weekly Prep: Facilitators are expected to become familiar and comfortable with the program material before each session. This includes reading over lesson plans, slides, and supplemental materials, getting a sense of timing and flow, and anticipating flexibility if parts of the session run longer or shorter than expected. Facilitators are encouraged to make each session their own by using their abilities and knowledge (storytelling, lived-experience, etc.) to complement and or supplement the content.

- 4 training sessions (3 hours each) scheduled at a time that works for the facilitator and IHI staff. Trainings will require some prep time beforehand.

Overview of Role:

Role and Responsibilities:
- Facilitators will understand IHI’s mission: that learning history is a way to better understand yourself and your community, as well as imagine a brighter future.
- Facilitators will lead weekly sessions that teach history and guide the participants in reflection about identity and Asian American issues.
- Facilitators will attend periodic check-ins with IHI, who will provide support for any questions or issues that arise.
- This position does not require expertise in Asian American history. Facilitators will have a passion to learn more about Asian American history and issues and value the power of activism and advocacy.
- All facilitators will attend a training that orients them with the AALP materials and methods of teaching and facilitation. All lesson plans, activities, and materials for program sessions are provided by IHI.
- The program is fully remote and held over Zoom except for the last week of the program, which will be an in-person celebration (dependent on COVID conditions) in New Jersey.
- Weekly Prep: Facilitators are expected to become familiar and comfortable with the program material before each session. This includes reading over lesson plans, slides, and supplemental materials, getting a sense of timing and flow, and anticipating flexibility if parts of the session run longer or shorter than expected. Facilitators are encouraged to make each session their own by using their abilities and knowledge (storytelling, lived-experience, etc) to complement and or supplement the content.

- 4 training sessions (3 hours each) scheduled during weekends or at times that work for the facilitator and IHI staff. Trainings will require some prep time beforehand.

The role requires preparing and giving presentations to audiences who have little to no exposure to AAPI studies and perspectives. The work includes facilitating and leading IHI’s existing workshops and developing new training and workshops in collaboration and under the supervision of IHI leadership. Some workshops will be in person and take place in the tri-state area. The Facilitator/Trainer reports to the Executive Directors and works in collaboration with IHI program and operational staff in developing and leading workshops, which may include occasional administrative and partnership development tasks. Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Political Science, Literature, or other relevant major with background in Asian American and Pacific Islander perspectives and stories
- At least 2 years of experience with workshop facilitation, especially professional development training with educators and professionals, which may include volunteer and internship experience
- Deep knowledge of Asian American and Pacific Islander history, literature, and contemporary issues
- Excellent communication skills, including ability to provide clear, engaging, and effective presentations
- Excellent organizational, research, and written skills
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and proactive, with ability to work independently
- Comfort and familiarity with Canva, Google Slides & Google Docs, Microsoft Office Suite, and Zoom.
- Committed to racial equity and social justice, and the mission and values of IHI
- Must be based in New Jersey or the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) with ability to travel to places in NJ, CT, and NY not easily accessible by public transportation
- Masters’ Degree or PhD in Asian American studies, History, or other relevant field
- Teaching experience in K-12 schools
- Familiarity with AAPI studies and other ethnic studies mandates and state requirements, esp. In NJ, NY, CT and the mid-Atlantic region
- Background in South Asian American, Southeast Asian American, and Pacific Islander history and willingness to research and develop workshops in these areas
