Launching Fall 2022

Asian American Leadership Program

This new pilot program will provide Asian American families with tools to learn about history, race, and belonging in America, using this knowledge to become empowered advocates for their communities.

At IHI, we believe in families as a site of transformational change.

Learning our histories, healing from trauma, and building a positive racial identity

The curriculum will introduce historical case studies, draw connections to today, and discuss theories of identity, intergenerational trauma, and racial equity. In the latter half of the pilot, cohorts will explore specific policy and community interventions, focusing on solutions that promote racial equity and cross-racial coalition-building. By the end of the program, participants will feel empowered to advocate for their families and communities using an antiracist framework that recognizes liberation for one community cannot be achieved before liberation for all.

Parallel tracks for multiple generations

We have identified clear gaps in how family members relate to each other within the Asian diaspora, particularly around conversations around race, migration, and identity. Building on our previous workshops for AAPI families during the pandemic, this program brings multiple generations together to learn Asian American history, theories of identity and trauma, and advocacy frameworks that promote racial equity. Parents and children will enroll in parallel tracks with their peer groups, and the different cohorts will meet regularly for facilitated intergenerational dialogue.

Implementation Committee-- Coming Soon!

See our parent leader Gigi Belen share her story and talk about why these programs are so important. For families like Gigi's, who grew up struggling to understand her Asian American identity in an immigrant household that had no access to their own histories in this country, IHI's work is critical.

A big thank-you to our funders for making this work possible!
